The Hope for the Journey Conference is designed to encourage and equip parents and caregivers meeting the everyday needs of children impacted by adoption and/or foster care. The conference is also a much-needed resource for churches, agencies, and organizations in their care and support of the families and communities they serve.

Hope For The Journey is a yearly conference developed by Show Hope, an organization founded by Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman in 2003 with the mission of caring for orphans by engaging the Church and reducing barriers to adoption. Project Belong has partnered with Show Hope to “simulcast” the Hope For The Journey conference in the Northern Virginia region.

We invite parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, social workers, churches, and organizations impacted by foster care and/or adoption across our region to come together to participate in viewing the content. Project Belong staff will guide you through the content and facilitate the time together.

Our goal is to provide as many opportunities as possible for individuals in our region to attend and receive this content! While each viewing will contain the same content, each one varies in location, cost, childcare availability, etc. Please read the details for each viewing carefully.

"My husband and I are in the thick of raising toddlers which is so fun, but definitely challenging at times. Hope for the Journey gave us a fresh perspective and tools to be able to guide our children better.

We're not just parents who are giving rules to keep them safe, but we're able to practice the process with them.

We're connecting, empowering, and correcting while reinforcing that relationship we have with each one of them."

FAQ

What are the learning objects of the conference?

  • To help understand the specific needs of the whole child; the principles of Connecting, Empowering, Correcting; and practical steps that can help children thrive.

  • To provide an in-depth look at the impact of trauma on children, including effects on brain development, neurochemistry, sensory processing, attachment behaviors, and the ability to self-regulate.

What does the content include?

The conference includes research-based tools to promote attachment and connection in families such as Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) methods developed by Drs. Karyn Purvis and David Cross at the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development at TCU. TBRI is a care model designed to help meet relational and developmental needs of children and youth impacted by trauma.

Outlined by Show Hope, the Hope for the Journey Conference also explores the gospel as foundational to TBRI and how churches and organizations can better support children and families in their ministries and communities.

What is TBRI?

Developed by Drs. Karyn Purvis and David Cross from the Karyn Purvis Institute of Child Development (KPICD) at TCU, TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) is a care model designed to help meet relational and developmental needs of children and youth impacted by trauma. TBRI considers the whole child—his or her brain, biology, behavior, body, and beliefs—and provides parents and caregivers with practical tools and insight to help their child(ren) reach his or her high potential. And, perhaps most integral, at TBRI’s core is connection—the truth that connection builds trust, and trust builds healthy relationships.

Is the conference faith-based?

Show Hope and Project Belong are faith-based organizations and evidence of that faith will naturally be part of the Hope for the Journey Conference. In an effort to further engage the Church in elevating trauma-competency, the Hope for the Journey Conference includes a module at the end which provides and additional resources to explore the gospel as foundational to TBRI, as outlined by Show Hope.
